A Backtrack to the Origin of Bags and Purses

Even in the earliest stages of civilization, bags and purses were already known to human beings as it were a part of men and women's every day. They were purposed to carry money, and other personal items as clothes were not yet invented with pockets in it. However, antique bags are rarely visible these days since they were made out of perishable materials.

Bags and purses came with different appearances, and designs. Some came with clasps or leather pouches, and some with long drawstrings. They are worn and attached to the belt or drawstrings. When pockets were introduced in the 17th century, men has slowly stopped the use of bags. From then on, bags belonged almost entirely to the women's domain.

From the 16th century onwards, women's purses are worn on a chatelaine crafted from precious metals with chain hooks. This served as a jewelry and status symbols in ancient times. The chatelaine evolved in appearance until a handbag finally replaced it at the beginning of the 20th century.

On the 18th century when the Romans were known, Greek and Roman ancient things became popular. The Classicism had an abstruse impact on women's fashion. Straight dresses came with an upward waistline matched by a handbag carried on a cord or chain. That was then the first true handbag in history. This was carried on throughout the 19th century. Often they were handmade by women with all kinds of fabrics.

In the Industrial Revolution, new manufacturing methods have risen. New materials were used for bag production which paved the way for new models and designs. New bags were developed for modern travelers, hand luggage, carrier bags and others.

In the modern and 20th century, a rapid succession of art and fashion movements came in and the handbag evolved apace with. However, the most influential factor for the production of handbags is women's emancipation. As they are now able to go to work and do a lot of things, the demand for an appropriate type of bag has grown to meet their practical needs. All sorts of bags were then produced for specific purposes such as leather document cases for office, casual bags, bags for evening use, and others.

Finally, branding became more and more of a big - league, and great designers emerged. Today, known are the Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Prada. Unlike the old times, handbags have now developed into a fashion accent, changing as the season does.
