What to Know About Silver Wedding Bands and Rings

For many years, luminous silver wedding bands and sterling silver engagement rings have never gone out of style. Even with the coming of new wedding ring metals and other materials of the last century.

If you choose to have a silver wedding ring, it is helpful to know a little bit about its characteristics and type of silver engagement rings and wedding bands.

Silver is a very soft and very malleable metal, and pure silver is much too soft to make into a wedding ring. Thus, the best silver for wedding rings, by far, is the sterling silver.

Characteristics of Sterling Silver

Sterling silver is composed of 92.5% silver and alloyed with 7.5% copper.

Sterling Silver Treatments

1. Flashing
The sterling silver wedding rings are mostly treated with a process called "flashing." To give an extra luster and shine, bands are plated with a light coat of "fine" silver which is 99.999% pure silver.

2. Rhodium Plate
Another treatment is Rhodium Plate which is used to increase its durability and luster. Rhodium plate wears off so it is up to the owner to renew the treatment or not.

Silver wedding bands and engagement rings require special care and are not as long-lasting as other types of metal rings like gold, palladium, and platinum.

Lastly, Silver has the highest electrical and heat conduction capacity. Which means if it is exposed to heat it will quickly become hot. So, for those who work in an industry exposed to electricity or heat, Silver may not be a good metal to choose for a wedding or engagement ring.
